You have many options for banks, and the choice is yours. Some people prefer to do strictly online banking.
When choosing a bank, be sure to consider the following:

• Check the cost of transfers to your homeland.
• Choose a branch that it convenient to you because you will have to do all major transactions at your home branch.
• Get an EC (debit) card, as other credit/debit cards are not widely accepted at shops and around town.

German Taxes

While living in Germany you must file German taxes for each year (you have two years to do so)
Inquire at your embassy or online to find out what you are responsible for in your home country.
Inquire at Human Resources for information on your German tax responsibilities.

Other Taxes

Church Tax—if you claim a religion, a percentage (8-9%) of your salary will be deducted. If you do not wish this tax to be deducted, make sure you do not claim a religion
Television and Radio Tax—if you have a television or a radio, the GEZ requires you to pay a tax. Speak to a colleague concerning the details of this procedure.

Tax advice to keep in mind:

• If you have children living with you in Berlin, then you may be eligible to receive “Kindergeld” (child money) from the German government.
• You should apply for child benefits within the first few months of living here—right away if possible.
• Inquire at Human Resources for information on the necessary documents and administration offices.
